Giant Eagle Drops Double Coupons in Canton

PITTSBURGH – Giant Eagle based here said it has discontinued its double coupon program in the Canton, Ohio market.

The chain said the move is in line with its strategy to tweak local tactics when called for. "We continuously adjust the promotional mix within geographic markets, based on many factors including customer feedback and competitive offerings," Giant Eagle spokesman Dan Donovan told Progressive Grocer.

Double coupons will continue in Akron, Cleveland, and Toledo, said Donovan. He added that Canton Giant Eagle customers can still use manufacturers coupons at full value, and earn double fuelperks! rewards on all qualifying in-store purchases.

Not surprisingly, Giant Eagle's decision to discontinue double coupons in Canton has left some loyal shoppers angry. A group of some 800 northeast Ohio couponers is considering a boycott of the chain in response, according to local reports.

With 145 corporate and 71 independently owned and operated supermarkets, Giant Eagle also operates 115 GetGo fuel and c-stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia, and Maryland
