Giant Eagle Chooses Symbol Technologies for Wireless Infrastructure

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. - Symbol Technologies announced today that Giant Eagle has chosen the Spectrum24 High Rate wireless local area network for its in-store infrastructure. The network will serve as the backbone to enable in-store use of PDF417 and MicroPDF bar codes.

Wireless LANs, combined with PDF417, will be used to manage perishables, such as fresh meats or prepared foods, in addition to applications managing Direct Store Delivery (DSD) and Shelf Price Auditing.

"We're committed to applying the latest wireless LAN technologies to maintain the highest quality of operation and to better service our customers," said Dave McGeary, Retail Technology Advisor at Giant Eagle. "Symbol provides the WLAN infrastructure expertise and the right portfolio of options in mobile computing technologies to work with that infrastructure to help meet our needs now and in preparation of the future."

"Innovative retailers, such as Giant Eagle, are pioneering new and exciting ways to utilize our technologies which directly affect their bottom line," said Frank Riso, Director, Retail Systems, Symbol Technologies. "Wireless LANs using PDF417 implementations enable store managers to handle multiple tasks in one quick bar code capture. Ultimately, this results in operational efficiency that minimizes shrink and maximizes gross profits."

Giant Eagle will consolidate its wireless backbone across all of its 200 stores.

Kyrus Corporation, retail systems specialist integrating multiple customer service solutions throughout the retail enterprise, including POS and inventory management, will be the Symbol business partner responsible for the wireless infrastructure integration.
