Giant Eagle Agrees To Hire Tops Markets Workers
PITTSBURGH -- Roughly 1,800 supermarket workers in Northeast Ohio will keep their jobs when Giant Eagle, based here, takes over the stores next month.
According to local reports, United Food & Commercial Workers Local 880 has reached an agreement with Tops and Giant Eagle regarding the sale of 18 Tops stores to Giant Eagle. The union said Giant Eagle has committed to hiring nearly all of the Tops employees in the purchased stores on terms and conditions comparable to what employees are receiving from Tops. The union also said Giant Eagle may hire an additional 500 workers from Tops grocery stores, which are set to close in early December.
Once the ownership transition takes place, the union said Tops workers will likely lose seniority and some vacation time, while other former Tops workers hired by Giant Eagle might face pay cuts of more than $2 an hour.
The Tops work force has weathered much uncertainly for the better part of the year, following the July announcement by parent company Ahold, that its 46 northeast Ohio stores were on the block. In October Giant Eagle purchased 18 Tops stores; 28 other Tops stores are set to close after the first week of December.
