Giant, Cigna Join Forces Market Medicare Part D Plans

LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food, LLC and Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna HealthCare have agreed to co-brand Cigna's Cignature Rx Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan and collaborate on co-sponsored educational communications for distribution in Giant pharmacies.

Under the terms of the agreement, Giant and Cigna will together inform and educate customers about the plan. Ahold USA, Giant's corporate parent, has chosen the health insurance company as the only Medicare Part D prescription drug plan sponsor with which it will co-brand a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan card.

"Through our pharmacies, it is Giant's mission to keep our customers healthy and well taken care of, and our partnership with CIGNA will enable us to do that better than ever," noted John Fegan, s.v.p. of pharmacy for Giant. "Through this initiative, we can now give our customers with Medicare the option for an accessible drug care plan as well as the education to make the right decision."

In alliance with NationsHealth, Inc., Cigna will offer three Cignature Rx Medicare Part D plan options with varying levels of coverage. Among the choices will be a no-deductible plan and a plan that provides an increased level of coverage for generic drugs through the coverage gap. Each option will feature access to prescription drugs. Plan participants will be able to get their prescriptions at any of the more than 50,000 Cignature Rx participating network pharmacies across the country, among them more than 160 Giant pharmacies.

Cigna will make educational information available to Giant's customers at the retailer's pharmacy departments. Enrolling customers will receive a co-branded prescription drug card permitting prescriptions to be filled at Cigna network participating pharmacies, including any Giant pharmacies.

As well as accepting Cigna Part D Prescription plan cards at its pharmacies, Giant will take Medicare Part D prescription drug cards from the other Medicare Part D providers approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Giant Food operates 191 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs more than 25,000 associates. Giant stores in Delaware operate under the Super G name. Included within the 191 stores are 162 full-service pharmacies.
