Giant-Carlisle/Tops Gear Up for Black History Month With Salute to Negro League
CARLISLE, Pa. -- Giant Food Stores, LLC/Tops Markets will again mark Black History month in participating stores starting Feb. 1 and continuing through the end of the month. This year display units illustrating Black History Month and highlighting Negro League baseball will be featured at Giant stores in Harrisburg, Lansdowne, Morrisville, and York, Pa., as well as Tops locations in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Rochester.
From the 1880s to 1950, African-Americans were barred from major league baseball teams, a state of affairs that gave rise to the many all-black professional and semi-professional teams that played throughout the country during that time. This loosely organized circuit of teams became known as the "Negro League."
Additionally, copies of "Profiles in Excellence" will be available to customers in all Giant and Tops stores. This year's edition features a celebration of African-American heritage, with profiles of influential players and manager sof Negro League baseball, including Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, Oscar Charleston, Leroy "Satchel" Page, Walter "Buck" Leonard, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, Roy Campanella, John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil and Effa Manley. Pennsylvania resident Dane Tilghman, a well-known artist whose work includes Negro League baseball images and African-American golf art, did all artwork on the display units.
In addition, associates from Tops corporate headquarters in Williamsville, N.Y. will conduct a "Read-In" at Porter-D'Youville Elementary School in Buffalo on Feb. 21, with all books read to the students focusing subjects related to black history.
