Giant-Carlisle/Martin's Shoppers Raise $500K for Children's Miracle Network

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Customers and employees at Giant Food Stores, LLC and Martin's Food Markets contributed in record amounts to help Children's Miracle Network hospitals in their communities, via the grocery chains' recently concluded annual "Candles for Kids" in-store holiday campaign: A total of $500,000 was raised to help hospitalized kids throughout the Ahold banners' operating areas.

The two-week Candles for Kids program ran this year from Nov. 30 to Dec. 16. Shoppers could buy a paper candle at the checkout for $1 each and write their names on the candles, which were then displayed in the stores. Last year Giant and Martin's customers and associates raised a little over $450,000 through the program.

Children's Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for children's hospitals across North America. The following hospitals will receive the "Candles for Kids" donations: Penn State Children's Hospital at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Janet Weis Children's Hospital at Geisinger Health Systems, and Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Giant operates stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia under the Giant Food Stores, Martin's Food Markets, and Foodsource banners.
