Giant-Carlisle Relaunches Gift Card Fundraiser as 'Cash for Causes'

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Giant Food Stores, LLC here is rebranding its gift card fundraising program under the name "Cash for Causes." The program targets schools and other nonprofit organizations.

"The Cash for Causes program is what was formerly called our organizational discount gift card program," Giant Food director of public relations Tracy Pawelski told Progressive Grocer. "Clearly, this popular program needed a new name. The program has always been available to 501(c)3s, including schools, and has been around for years."

Noted Giant Food v.p. for advertising and marketing Denny Hopkins in a statement, "Gift cards are not only for gift giving; customers can use them just like cash, for everyday grocery shopping. Additionally, organization supporters simply go about their regular shopping to help earn money -- no additional sign-up is needed!"

Organizations, foundations, and schools registered as 501(c)3 charitable organizations are eligible to enroll in the program by registering at any Giant-Carlisle store or by calling (800) 380-3814. Under the program, the group buys a minimum of $500 worth of Giant Food gift cards at a 5 percent discount. Then the group resells the gift cards at face value and receives the profit from the sales. Nonprofit organizations can purchase the gift cards year-round.

Giant, one of six retail-operating companies under Ahold USA, currently operates 103 stores as Giant Food Stores, 119 stores as Tops Markets, and 26 stores as Martin's Food Markets. With nearly 38,000 associates Giant serves a six-state market area.
