Giant-Carlisle Launches Healthy Field Trips for Kids

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Giant Food Stores, LLC here has joined forces with Chicago-based Field Trip Factory to roll out "Kid Healthy Ideas," a field-trip program that supports the nutrition and healthy-living curriculum taught at schools in central Pennsylvania, a key market area of the retailer.

"Childhood obesity is one of the biggest health issues today and our goal is to educate children on how to make healthier choices in their every day eating habits," said Giant's health-and-wellness manager, Felicia Miller, in a statement. "Currently we have 58 tours, with a total of more than 1,300 students scheduled for March alone."

The aim of the free pilot program is to help children in kindergarten through sixth grade develop and improve their skills in healthy living and nutrition, oral health care practices, and decision-making. Trained tour leaders adapt the field trips to each grade. Children receive complimentary goodie bags to reinforce what they've learned.

Giant is offering the program at 10 central Pennsylvania stores starting this month and running through May 2007. The stores are in Mechanicsburg, Harrisburg, Carlisle, Camp Hill, Enola, Hummelstown, Dillsburg, and Hershey.

Ahold-owned Giant Food Stores operates stores in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia under the Giant Food Stores, TOPS Markets, Martin's Food Markets and "foodsource" banners.
