Giant-Carlisle Expands School Field Trip Program

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Giant Food Stores, LLC and Martin's Food Market are now offering "Kid Healthy Ideas," a field trip program that reinforces the nutrition and healthy living curriculum taught in area schools. Last year Giant ran a pilot of Kid Healthy Ideas at 10 central Pennsylvania locations, hosting 132 tours for 3,300 students.

"This proven program gives teachers and families a fun and interactive way to help children make healthier choices in their everyday eating habits," noted Giant and Martin's corporate nutritionist, Sylvia Emberger, in a statement. "We had such success with the pilot program that we have rolled it out to an additional 50 stores across the chain."

The free program helps children in grades pre-K through six develop and enhance skills in healthy living and nutrition, good oral care, and exercise. Posted to each participating store, tour leaders are trained to tailor field trips to the grade level of the children. Kids can learn about methods of recycling and environmentally friendly items available in supermarkets, and at the end of a tour, each student receives a complimentary goodie bag to serve as a reminder of the lessons learned at the store.

A list of participating stores can be found at visit by typing in the area zip code. Interested parties also can schedule a Kid Healthy Ideas tour by calling (800) 987-6409. Tours last about 60 to 90 minutes and are limited to 30 participants per trip.

Giant is employing a variety of marketing elements to tell students, teachers, and families about Kid Healthy Ideas, including such in-store reminders as window posters, bag stuffers, and in-store radio spots. Customers also can check Giant and Martin's weekly circulars and the corporate Web sites for information.

Giant Food Stores operates stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia under the Giant Food Stores, Martin's Food Markets and Foodsource banners.
