German Grocer Lidl Installing Solar Panels on DCs, Office Buildings

Discount food supermarkets Lidl Stiftung plans to install solar panels on its distribution centers and office buildings throughout Europe to supplement its traditional energy sources.

The Neckarsulm, Germany-based food retailer is working with Enfinity N.V. of Waregem, Belgium, and SolarMarkt AG of Freiburg, Germany, on the project.

Under the motto "Auf dem Weg nach Morgen," (“on the way to tomorrow”), Lidl has already been contributing to the protection of the environment and the improvement of energy efficiency through various green initiatives.

Enfinity and SolarMarkt AG will use special substructure systems and different solar module types for the large roof surfaces, which will guarantee the successful operation of the solar systems on a long-term basis. “We developed a complete package for Lidl and will be operating the systems after their installation,” said Dr. Karl Bangert, manager of Enfinity Germany.

Preparations for the installation of the solar systems are already under way, and the work will begin in several countries in the months to come. In addition to Germany, the systems will also be installed in facilities in Belgium, Italy, Spain, France, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
