Genuardi's Announces Management Changes

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Safeway Inc. announced on Monday that Hank Mullany, president of Genuardi's, will be leaving the organization after a planned transition of leadership to Maria Fidelibus, newly appointed vice president & general manager.

Mullany, who had been president of Genuardi's since the merger with Safeway and provided key leadership during the integration, joined the company in 1988 as controller. He was named a director in 1990, was elected vice president, finance a year later and became executive vice president and chief operating officer in 1996. Mullany came to Genuardi's from Coopers and Lybrand, where he was a management consultant. Prior to that he held various management positions with Fleming Foods.

"Under Hank's leadership, we have rapidly assimilated Safeway's corporate culture into Genuardi's while integrating both companies' best practices," said Steven A. Burd, chairman, president and CEO of Safeway Inc. "We gratefully acknowledge his significant contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Maria Fidelibus, currently vice president, retail operations of Genuardi's, will move up to vice president and general manager.

Fidelibus has been vice president, retail operations at Genuardi's since last May. She began her career in 1990 as a systems analyst in the company's information technology group and played a leading role in developing and implementing several system enhancements across the Genuardi's organization. In 1997 she was elected vice president in charge of information technology and administration.

"Maria has an ideal blend of analytical, marketing and inter-personal skills," said Burd. "We're confident that, under her leadership, Genuardi's will continue as the premier food and drug retailer in the greater Philadelphia area."

Genuardi's Family Markets operates 44 stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey and has approximately 7,500 employees.
