FreshDirect Creates '500-Calorie Meal' Program

NEW YORK -- Online grocer FreshDirect yesterday launched its new 500-Calorie Meals menu for the holiday season, to allow customers to easily and inexpensively shop for and prepare healthy meals that contain no more than 500 calories.

"We continue to look for new and innovative ways to help our customers shop smartly for meals that suit their specific needs," said Steve Michaelson, president of FreshDirect. "With the holidays upon us, and throughout the year, many of our customers will be looking for ways to eat healthier meals that are fresh, fast, and flavorful."

Each portion-controlled meal was designed by FreshDirect's resident nutritionist, Melissa Iglesias, who created numerous meal choices, including seafood bouillabaisse and Berkshire pork medallions with grilled asparagus.

FreshDirect's 500-Calorie Meals each serve two and range in price from $9.99 for mussels in white wine sauce with whole wheat rolls to $19.99 for antibiotic-free chicken breasts with minestrone and grilled asparagus.

According to FreshDirect, consumers can expect to see savings of 10 percent to 20 percent compared with purchasing items a la carte. The retailer also offers optional items for consumers to add on, including Evian, San Pellegrino, and Perrier Sparkling Mineral Water.
