Fresh Grocer To Build New Unit on LaSalle University Campus

PHILADELPHIA -- Local independent Fresh Grocer announced plans to build a shopping center with a supermarket on the La Salle University campus -- an area long in need of a supermarket --in the Northwest part of the city here.

At a news conference on the campus earlier this week, officials said construction would begin next summer on the $15 million shopping center, anchored by a Fresh Grocer supermarket, according to local reports. Construction is expected to be completed in summer of 2007.

Residents of the urban district -- which has been devoid of a supermarket for some 40 years -- are rejoicing, since many were routinely forced to travel by bus to purchase groceries at supermarkets outside of their immediate neighborhood.

Moreland Development L.L.C. of Bala Cynwyd, Pa., will develop the shopping center that will be built on a La Salle athletic practice field, the local report said. The new Fresh Grocer is slated to be 75,000-sq.-ft., and an adjacent strip of stores would be 20,000-sq.-ft.

Brother Michael McGinnis, president of La Salle, said the shopping center marks the university's first work in community economic development.
