Former Ukrop’s Stores to Operate Under Martin’s Banner

Ahold’s Giant-Carlisle division said yesterday it has completed its acquisition of 25 Ukrop’s Super Markets in the greater Richmond and Williamsburg, Va., area, adding that the locations will begin operating under the Martin’s banner this spring. The deal to acquire the stores was first revealed in December 2009.

“Since the sale was announced in December, we have been talking to customers and associates about what they would like to see change and what should remain the same,” noted Rick Herring, president of Carlisle, Pa.-based Giant Food Stores and operator of Martin’s. “Regardless of how we’ve received their comments — sometimes in the form of songs and poems — we have been listening to what the community was saying.”

While some features will remain the same — the Ukrop family will continue to supply Ukrop’s kitchen and bakery products to the stores — other things are set to change: stores will open on Sundays and sell carry-out beer and wine, in common with the nine Martin’s already operating in Virginia.

“Though the name on the front of the store will change … this spring, customers can expect to find the same friendly store associates including pharmacists,” added Herring. “Will associates be available to carry customers’ bags to their car if they would like? You bet they will!”

According to the executive, the rebranded stores will strive to establish good will in their surrounding communities. “We intend to build lasting relationships and play an active role in contributing to the good health of greater Richmond and Williamsburg,” he said.
