Former A&P Facility to Give Way to Possible Wal-Mart Supercenter
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. -- Demolition on an approximately 1.5 million-square-foot facility here that once served as an A&P manufacturing plant has begun, the beginning of a three-month project that could clear the way for the construction of a Wal-Mart supercenter, according to published reports.
Demolition was delayed for several months while asbestos was removed from the building, which was built in 1965 and shut down in 1982, leaving around 1,000 employees jobless. The structure, located on a 96-acre lot owned by Toledo, Ohio-based Developers Diversified Realty (DDR), was at one time believed to be the biggest manufacturing operation under one roof in the United States.
Wal-Mart said in January that it planned to build a 203,000-square-foot superstore on the site, replacing a nearby conventional Wal-Mart at site also owned by DDR. Phil Serghini, community affairs manager for Wal-Mart's Northeast region, told PG that he couldn't confirm that a store would be built in Horseheads.
The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, but rezoning of the site from industrial manufacturing to retail is underway, according to Horseheads town supervisor Mike Edwards.
