Food Lion's '06 Donations Exceed $9 Million

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Last year was another period of abundant giving for Food Lion here. The Delhaize-owned chain, and its Food Lion Charitable Foundation Inc., raised and donated approximately $9.25 million for non-profit organizations in 2006.

Recipients of Food Lion's community service efforts included the Children's Miracle Network (CMN), America's Second Harvest food banks, Easter Seals United Cerebral Palsy (UCP), the American Red Cross, and local charities.

The Food Lion Charitable Foundation provided grants in excess of $1.8 million to more than 100 schools and other local non-profit organizations.

Food Lion stores raised more than $2.6 million for CMN and its network of children's hospitals. Easter Seals UCP received more than $1.5 million from Food Lion and its customers. Food Lion's annual "Shop & Care" campaign is recognized nationally as the largest food industry fundraiser for Easter Seals UCP.

Individual stores also made contributions totaling more than $450,000 to charities and community activities in their local areas. In addition to those locally organized donations, Food Lion contributed $1.1 million to community organizations.

America's Second Harvest and its affiliated food banks garnered more than $806,768 in monetary donations from two Food Lion hunger campaigns. Total food/product donations given directly from individual Food Lion stores to local food banks in 2006 reached $38.6 million.

The company's "Lion Shop and Share" program dispersed $1 million to a wide variety of non-profit organizations in Food Lion's 11-state operations area. Individual Food Lion stores participated in a multitude of community service projects, including school supply drives, food drives, and fund-raising efforts for families coping with financial hardships from medical bills and other disasters.
