Food Lion Transitions to New S.V.P. of Human Resources

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion LLC, a division of the Delhaize Group, has named Robert Stapleton, a former Hannaford executive, as s.v.p. of human resources, replacing Darrell Johnson, A Food Lion vet of more than 20 years who will retire at the end of 2007.

Stapleton was most recently v.p. of retail operations for Food Lion's Western Division. He has extensive experience in food retailing and human resources. He joined Hannaford in 1976 and served in a number of management positions before being named v.p. of human resources for its Southeast Division in 1997.

From 2000 to 2003, Stapleton was with Lee Hecht Harrison, a leading consulting and career management services company, where he served initially as v.p. and director of professional services, and later as s.v.p. and g.m. for the Eastern Carolina office. In 2003, he joined Food Lion as v.p. of organizational development.

"In addition to his extensive experience and knowledge, Bob brings an incredible passion to the work of human resources, where he practices his calling to help unleash the potential in individuals, teams, and organizations," said Rick Anicetti, president and c.e.o. of Food Lion, in a statement.

The company said Johnson, who had announced his retirement earlier this year, will continue through the conclusion of 2007 to oversee such areas as workforce of the future, leadership competencies, crisis planning, leadership training, and development and recruitment.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, Johnson joined Food Lion in 1984, after the chain bought his previous employer, Giant Food Markets. He served as payroll manager, assistant controller, and manager of compensation and benefits,before being named v.p. of human resources in 1997. He later was named s.v.p. of human resources,and became a member of Food Lion LLC's executive committee.

Anicetti said Johnson was "instrumental in the company's development and progress in areas from risk management/loss prevention to organizational development, benefits design, and diversity and inclusion."

Food Lion operates more than 1,200 supermarkets, either directly or through affiliated entities, under the names of Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar Food, Harveys, and Reid's.
