Food Lion to Remodel Myrtle Beach Units by Mid-2007

SALISBURY, N.C. - Food Lion shared more details this week about its latest market renewal project, planned for Myrtle Beach, S.C., saying it plans to remodel 20 Myrtle Beach-area stores by mid-2007.

The chain said on its Web site that it will completely renovate a number of the stores, equipping them with new interiors. Others will undergo significant remodeling work. The end result will be a more consistent interior design for Food Lion across the region, the retailer said.

All of the stores will offer greatly enhanced fresh departments, including produce, meats, deli and bakery; improved checkout and customer service areas; new signage, graphics and decor; and enhanced lighting, Food Lion said.

The remodeling work will allow more space for natural and organic foods, international items, and expanded beer and wine offerings.

"This is an effort to better serve our customers," said Scott Harrison, Food Lion regional v.p. for retail operations. "Clearly, the Myrtle Beach area has been one of Food Lion's most important markets for more than 25 years, and it will continue to be. It's also a market seeing significant growth. Such growth brings change, and Food Lion is responding to these changes by offering an enhanced shopping experience in addition to great prices, practical convenience and neighborly service."

Food Lion said it plans to wrap up the work before the busy resort area's summer vacation season.

The stores being remodeled are in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Calabash, Conway, Garden City, Holden Beach, Little River, Loris, Murrells Inlet, Pawleys Island, Socastee, Sunset Beach, and Surfside Beach.

Food Lion vowed that the renovations would not lead to increased prices, as the work is part of the company's budgeted resources for capital improvements.

"Food Lion's commitment to being the lowest-price supermarket at the Beach remains strong," spokesman Jeff Lowrance said.

Food Lion did not release the costs of renovating and remodeling the stores.

Food Lion LLC, a subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group, has completed market renewal projects in several markets since 2003, including Raleigh, N.C., Greensboro, N.C., Baltimore, Md., and Washington, D.C. In addition to Myrtle Beach, the retailer will conduct a market renewal project in Norfolk, Va. in 2007.
