Food Lion Plans 3 New Stores to Augusta, Ga. Market

Food Lion said it is adding to its store group in the Augusta, Ga. market, with one store to be ready by year's end, and two scheduled for completion mid-year 2009. The new locations, each around 35,000 square feet, will give the Salisbury, N.C.-based chain 14 stores in the Augusta area, and 40 in the state.

A new Food Lion on North Belair Road should be ready by the end of 2008, according to company spokeswoman Jennifer Anderson-Speck. The grocer is also building stores at Furys Ferry and Evans to Locks roads, and at Columbia and Lewiston roads, set to open next year. "The new stores will be modeled like our new prototype store," Anderson-Speck said. Brick exteriors with "historic styling and bracketed roof supports" will highlight the new facilities.

The new Augusta area stores will offer a Nature's Place department of natural and organic products, a larger wine and beer selection, full-service deli/bakery plus international and specialty items.
