Food Lion to Participate in Anti-Hunger Campaign
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion here is gearing up to encourage its shoppers to participate in the "Hunger Has a Cure" campaign from June 7 through July 7, to support local food banks affiliated with the America's Second Harvest network. All monetary and food donations stay in the communities where given to feed the hungry.
Food Lion customers can support their local food banks and feed the hungry during the month-long campaign in three ways: Drop their loose change in coin collection canisters at each checkout; purchase paper icons for $1 each; and purchase ready-made boxes of food for $5.99. The local Second Harvest food banks will pick up the donated boxes of food at the stores.
This is Food Lion's third-annual Hunger Has a Cure campaign. Through the 2004 campaign, Food Lion customers and employees contributed $93,930 in cash and 123,896 pounds of food, which has a retail value of more than $185,800. Overall in 2004, Food Lion raised and donated approximately 27 million pounds (13,500 tons) of food to Second Harvest food banks. All Food Lion stores are encouraged to partner with a local food bank and make food donations.
"As a grocer, Food Lion is well positioned to help feed the hungry, and it's one way we help our neighbors and communities," said John Mercer, Food Lion v.p. of retail services. "Food Lion acts on the belief that assisting the hungry should be a priority for food retailers. In feeding those in need through the America's Second Harvest network, we help build a spirit of partnership and strengthen our communities."
June 7, the start of the Food Lion campaign, is National Hunger Awareness Day.
