Food Lion Names Ex-Kroger Exec as Fresh S.V.P.

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion has brought in a merchandiser from Kroger to help with its ongoing strategy to focus more intensively on fresh.

The chain here said yesterday it hired Derrick Penick as s.v.p. of fresh merchandising and distribution. Penick will oversee and direct Food Lion's fresh produce, meat, deli, and bakery operations, including quality control and selection, and vendor relations. He will also be responsible for the company's extensive procurement, distribution, and transportation network.

Penick succeeds Cathy Green, who was moved to the post of s.v.p. for retail operations.

Before joining Food Lion, Penick most recently was v.p. of merchandising at Kroger's King Soopers division in Denver. Prior to that, he held a number of leadership positions with Kroger, including group v.p. of perishables, v.p. of merchandising, meat director and store manager.

Born and raised in Lexington, Ky., Penick earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Kentucky.
