Food Lion Named America's Second Harvest Regional Retailer of the Year

SALISBURY, N.C. - Food Lion, a subsidiary of Delhaize America, was named America's Second Harvest's Regional Retailer of the Year at an award's dinner in Snowbird, Utah, on Sept. 29.

New this year, the Regional Retailer of the Year Award was created to recognize regional retailers who support Second Harvest affiliates as aggressively as national retailers but support fewer affiliates. Award winners are determined by the number and strength of the nominations submitted by Second Harvest affiliates.

Between January and June 2002, Food Lion distributed 4,255,500 pounds of food and $6,383,250 through Second Harvest affiliates in 11 states. In 2001, Food Lion donated 17.2 million pounds of food in its communities.

This year, Food Lion has participated in four large Second Harvest food drives: the Food Bank of North Carolina drive in Raleigh, N.C., the Food Bank of Metrolina effort in Charlotte, N.C., the Harvest Hope Food Bank drive in Columbia, S.C., and the statewide Second Harvest Food Banks of Virginia campaign. Individual Food Lion stores, throughout the company's 11-state operations area, support local community food banks on a daily basis.
