Food Lion Nabs 13th Straight EPA Energy Star Award
Food Lion has received its 13th consecutive Energy Star award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The award recognizes leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency.
“Food Lion has focused on numerous sustainability initiatives for more than a decade, such as energy conservation, reducing carbon dioxide emissions throughout our 10-state footprint and reducing its energy consumption by more than 30 percent since 2000,” said Susan Sollenberger, director of energy, maintenance and equipment purchasing at the Salisbury, N.C.-based chain, a Delhaize America company.
Special Recognition
“Food Lion has earned EPA’s highest Energy Star award – the 2014 Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award – because of their unwavering commitment to helping consumers become increasingly more energy efficient,” noted EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe.
The Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Awards go to select organizations that have lowered greenhouse gas emissions by setting and meeting aggressive goals, and employing innovative energy-efficiency approaches. Winners come from the nearly 20,000 organizations that take part in the voluntary market-based Energy Star program, which was introduced in 1992.
Food Lion operates more than 1,100 supermarkets in 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, and employs approximately 57,000 associates.
