Food Lion Kicks Off State Fair Canned Food Drive

SALISBURY, N.C. - Food Lion said yesterday it's donating more than 2.4 tons (4,911 pounds) of Food Lion canned products to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina as part of "Food Lion Hunger Relief Day" at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh, N.C.

Fairgoers are being asked to bring four cans of Food Lion brand products to the N.C. State Fair on Oct. 19 to receive free admission. Hunger Relief Day at the Fair is one of the largest single-day canned-food drives in the state, held each year to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. In the 14-year history of the event, fairgoers have donated more than 2 million pounds of food.

In 2005 approximately 185,000 pounds of food were collected, Food Lion said. This is the retailer's third-consecutive year sponsoring the popular event.

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina will distribute the cans to persons in need and hunger-relief agencies in a 34-county area surrounding Raleigh, as well as to Second Harvest Food Banks in other regions, such as Fayetteville, Winston-Salem, and Elizabeth City.

Food Lion also is the Blue Ribbon Sponsor of the Youth Livestock Shows and was the official retail grocery store of the Fair's advance ticket sales program.

Food Lion LLC is a subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group.
