Food Lion Hits the 400 Energy Star Mark

SALISBURY, N.C. -- If you're wondering how to run an energy-efficient supermarket, just ask Food Lion. The retailer here will celebrate the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's certification of its 400th Energy Star store later this month, at one of its so-designated stores in Stevensville, Md.

"Four-hundred Energy Star stores is a remarkable figure," Food Lion's spokesman Jeff Lowrance told Progressive Grocer. "I don't think any other retailer comes close to that mark."

The Energy Star label means these Food Lion stores are some of the most energy-efficient retail facilities in the United States. The retailer has used benchmarking, renovations, and new construction to continue making its operations energy efficient throughout the years. Food Lion's involvement in benchmarking energy efficiency will be discussed in greater detail in the Oct. 15 issue of Progressive Grocer.

Food Lion has been an Energy Star partner since 1998. Since 2000, the company has reduced its energy use by more than 1.62 trillion Btu.

In March, Food Lion received an Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award from the EPA for its outstanding leadership in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy management.
