Food Lion to Help Showcase Green Refrigeration Technology

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion LLC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and vendor-partner Hill Phoenix will host an informational tour next Tuesday of Food Lion's Montpelier, Va. Store, among the first to use a natural ingredient as the coolant in its refrigeration units.

The store will use Hill Phoenix's Second Nature Advanced LT system, which uses CO2 gas - instead of refrigerants -- as the secondary heat transfer fluid. When pumped through the store, the CO2 removes heat from display cases and walk-in freezers, eliminating the need for HFC refrigerants. CO2 is a natural component of the environment, is inexpensive and readily available, and has excellent thermodynamic and transport properties, according to the parties involved.

The event will begin with an 11 a.m. tour, include comments from Food Lion and EPA officials, and wind up with a light lunch.

Retailers interested in attending can contact Lore Postman at [email protected].

Food Lion is a subsidiary of Delhaize America, the U.S. division of Brussels-based Delhaize Group. It operates more than 1,200 stores and employs approximately 70,000 associates, in 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
