Food Lion Earns 6th Energy Star Award

SALISBURY, N.C. - Food Lion LLC yesterday won its sixth consecutive Energy Star partner award, for its leadership in protecting the environment through energy efficiency and superior energy management. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented the retailer with its Energy Star Sustained Excellence 2007 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

"Food Lion is dedicated to identifying ways we can protect the environment and conserve energy while meeting business objectives," said Kyle Mitchell, Food Lion v.p. of construction and indirect procurement. "Receiving an Energy Star award for the sixth time demonstrates the successes we've had being a world-class leader in energy management in the supermarket industry."

According to the EPA, the Sustained Excellence 2007 Award goes to a select group of organizations that exhibit strong leadership year after year. Award winners set and achieved aggressive goals, employed innovative approaches, and have shown others what can be achieved through energy efficiency.

Food Lion was recognized for its ongoing leadership in using energy efficiently at retail and integrating energy efficiency into its overall organizational strategy. Food Lion also earned the Sustained Excellence award in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Food Lion received Energy Star Partner of the Year awards in 2002 and 2003.

Food Lion is the only supermarket company to earn Energy Star partner awards in six-consecutive years.

Since 2000, Food Lion has trimmed energy use by more than 27 percent (2.43 trillion Btu) -- through new lighting, refrigeration, and heating and cooling technologies and company-wide energy management efforts -- despite a net increase in the number of stores and the addition of two new banners. New technologies and on-going energy management projects have helped Food Lion net energy reductions equal to powering 457 virtual Food Lion stores.

Based on EPA calculations, each of Food Lion's Energy Star stores saves as much as 86,000 kWh per year -- enough to power nine American homes for an entire year. The energy savings at each store also prevent 190,920 pounds of CO2 emissions per year, equal to removing the pollution of 19 cars or planting nearly 26 acres of trees.

Food Lion is a subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group, and operates 1,300 supermarkets, either directly or through affiliated entities, under the names of Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar, Harveys, and Reid's.
