Food Lion Cuts 80 Jobs

Food Lion has eliminated 80 jobs, 41 of which are in corporate offices in Salisbury, N.C. with the remaining positions affecting staffers at headquarters in other states, according to local press reports.

The job cuts pertain to staff members across all of Food Lion LLC's operating divisions, including its eponymous flagship banner and Harvey's, Bottom Dollar and Bloom stores.

Food Lion spokeswoman Karen Peterson was quoted as saying that in the ongoing trying economic climate, the company couldn't risk continuing a business-as-usual stance without taking some action. "It's our objective to continue to evaluate and improve our business in order to better meet the needs of our customers and remain a successful organization in uncertain times," said Peterson, in a published report. Consequently, she added, "[W]e've had to make the difficult decision to eliminate some positions."

No jobs in the grocery chain's distribution centers, retail stores and transportation division have been cut, and all people affected by the measure will receive a full severance package.

A subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group, Food Lion, LLC operates more than 1,300 supermarkets in 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
