Food City Holds Tamale Festival; Kicks Off Spirit of Sharing Holiday Program
CHANDLER, Ariz. - Regional low-price, Hispanic-focused chain Food City here brought together Arizona's finest tamale-makers this weekend for its annual Tamale Festival in downtown Phoenix.
The culinary food festival and fundraiser takes place when many Hispanic families are making their own homemade tamales for the holidays. Attendees can buy homemade tamales and enjoy a variety of musical entertainment, as well as Latin arts and crafts.
The tamale-makers are primarily composed of religious groups who prepare their tamales in church commissaries. They sell the tamales to support their organizations' programs. Thirty parishes are participating in this year's festival.
In other Food City news, the retailer has kicked off its annual "Espiritu de Compartir" (Spirit of Sharing) holiday program. Every year Food City offers to provide families with an "Espiritu de Compartir" care package, consisting of two grocery bags filled with a variety of food items to assist them with their preparations for the holidays.
Nominations for families in need of care packages are made by members of the communities where Food City operates. The program goes by different names in different areas.
Food City has been part of the Arizona community for more than 50 years. Bashas' acquired Food City in 1993 and since then it has grown to more than 62 stores statewide.
