Food and Gifts Help Boost Wal-Mart's Nov. Comps 1.5 Percent

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said yesterday that its November same-store sales rose 1.5 percent as shoppers purchased more groceries, pharmacy items, and gifts.

Total sales for the month rose 8.4 percent to $31.72 billion from $29.27 billion a year earlier, including a 4.8 percent increase at Wal-Mart Stores, an 8.7 percent rise at Sam's Club, and international sales growth of 18.6 percent.

The company said its November same-store sales were driven by grocery and pharmacy goods, as well as strong "Black Friday" sales across the store.

Same-store sales may increase from 1 percent to 3 percent this month, the retailer said in a statement.

Wal-Mart also said yesterday it is turning back the calendar with another "Black Friday"-style price event this weekend. The retailer unveiled its new "Secret In-Store Specials" yesterday on Walmart.com.

The specials include savings up to 30 percent on electronics and other items, as well as its first shipment of the popular Webkinz toys.

Since Nov. 2, Wal-Mart has offered three rounds of "Secret In-Store Specials," revealing on its Web site groups of items with values for holiday shoppers.

The retailer said "millions of customers have signed up for e-mail and text message alerts through Walmart.com to learn of these specials as soon as they are unveiled."
