Food 4 Less to Open First Chicago Store

CHICAGO - Kroger-owned chain Food 4 Less is set to open its first price-impact, warehouse-format supermarket in Chicago in the city's historic Back of the Yards neighborhood on Jan. 15.

"We are very excited about this opportunity," said Jay Cummins, VP and general manager of Food 4 Less' Midwest Division. "We think Back of the Yards will be a great Food 4 Less community, and we look forward to offering our unique brand of friendly service to customers who appreciate quality and value at everyday low prices."

Cummins added that the company is continuing to scout more potential sites throughout the city of Chicago.

The 59,000-square-foot store is opening in a formerly vacant building that previously housed a Montgomery Wards department store. The building has sat empty for several years. Food 4 Less acquired the vacant site last year and invested more than $6 million in renovating the building, the company said.

The new Food 4 Less is expected to help the ongoing revitalization of Back of the Yards and attract additional commercial development to the area.

The new Back of the Yards store will feature several specialty departments, including a full-service delicatessen/bakery offering a complete selection of salads, deli meats and cheeses, sandwiches-to-go, party trays, and freshly prepared take-out meals, as well as fresh breads, cookies, rolls, pies and custom-decorated cakes for all occasions.

Shoppers on a budget will also enjoy the store's large club pack section, "Wall of Values" area featuring many name brand products at special discounted prices. The store also carries a wide selection of ethnic foods. Special services include postage stamps, film developing, motorized shopping carts for customers with mobility impairments, and specially-designed shopping carts with infant carriers. The store also has been outfitted with state-of-the-art energy efficient equipment and lighting, and environmentally safe refrigeration, the company said.

The new Back of the Yards store is the third Food 4 Less store to serve the greater Chicagoland area. Food 4 Less also operates stores in Burbank, and Hammond, Ind.

In total, Food 4 Less operates 124 price-impact, warehouse-format supermarkets under the banners Food 4 Less in Southern California, southern Nevada, and the Chicago area; and Foods Co in Northern California.
