Five Jewel-Osco stores to become Pick 'n Saves
MILWAUKEE -- Roundy's Supermarkets Inc. has closed on the purchase of five Jewel-Osco stores here from Supervalu, Inc.
The stores closed for business Monday evening and will reopen as Pick 'n Save stores this Friday. The pharmacies and banks in these stores will remain open for business throughout this three-day period. Roundy's said it's in the process of offering employment to all store-level employees at the five stores.
The locations purchased by Milwaukee-based Roundy's are 355 North 35th St., Milwaukee; 1100 East Garfield, Milwaukee; 1735 West Silver Spring, Glendale; 13995 West National Ave., New Berlin; and 11111 West Greenfield, West Allis, Wis.
Supervalu previously announced plans to exit the southeast Wisconsin market earlier in the month, and has since filed notices with the state Department of Workforce Development, warning of its plans to close the 10 remaining Milwaukee-area Jewel-Osco stores, beginning March 23. However, a company spokeswoman said last week that the firm was still talking with potential buyers for those locations.
In other news, Roundy's opened the doors to its newest supermarket in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of Racine, Wis. The 59,000-square-foot Pick 'n Save was built from the ground up with Roundy's most updated exterior design. The new store has created more than 180 new jobs for the area.
The grand opening party was set against a "Winter Wonderland" theme and included appearances by the jazz ensembles from Racine Horlick High School and Jerstad Middle School. As a special gift from Pick 'n Save, West Ridge Elementary School received 250 tickets to the Milwaukee Public Museum.
The new store is Roundy's sixth Pick 'n Save in Racine County.
Roundy's operates 148 retail grocery stores under the Pick 'n Save, Copps, and Rainbow banners in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois.
