First Group of Loblaw Cash and Carry Stores Slated to Close
TORONTO -- Loblaw Cos., Inc. has identified the first group of the 43 warehouse outlets here that it intends to close, citing diminished profits from tobacco sales. The first slated for shuttering are reported to be five Cash and Carry stores across Canada's Maritime provinces, located in the eastern part of the country.
The targeted units fall under Loblaw subsidiary Atlantic Wholesalers, according to published reports, and are scheduled to close in January and February 2007.
The locations are in Charlottetown, P.E.I.; Truro, N.S.; Dartmouth, N.S.; Fredericton, N.B.; and Saint John, N.B. and employ 68 employees. An Atlantic Wholesalers official said that most of the employees would be offered alternative employment.
Atlantic Wholesalers has been a Loblaw division since 1976.
