Farmland Foods Donates to Environmental Groups

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Farmland Foods is sharing proceeds it received from a recent environmental award with two non-profit organizations, Living Lands and Waters and Pheasants Forever.

The company donated $1,500 to Living Lands and Waters, headquartered in East Moline, Ill., to further the organization's commitment to raising environmental awareness regarding the protection, preservation and restoration of the country's major rivers and watersheds.

Farmland also donated $1,500 to the local chapter of Pheasants Forever to help with its goal of protecting and enhancing pheasants and other wildlife through habitat improvement, public awareness, education and advocacy for sound management.

Farmland's Monmouth facility received the Smithfield Foods Environmental Excellence Award for Energy and Water Conservation after implementing a water conservation project that reduced the plant's water usage by more than 1.8 million gallons a year. The savings resulted when equipment, which previously had been cooled by water, was replaced with newer, air-cooled technology.

"Our employees take their environmental stewardship responsibilities very seriously, and they decided it would be a good idea to share their award with two very deserving environmental organizations," said Tim Schellpeper, Farmland's s.v.p./operations. "We're very proud of our employees for their dedication, hard work and spirit of service."

Farmland Foods, a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, Inc., processes fresh and frozen pork products for national retail and foodservice markets, with a strong concentration in the Midwest.
