Farm Fresh President Retiring at Week’s End

Ron Dennis, president of Farm Fresh, will retire from the Virginia Beach, Va.-based division of Supervalu Friday, according to published reports. Brian Huff, SVP of specialty retail at Minneapolis-based Supervalu, will occupy the position of interim president until a successor is appointed.

Dennis’ 52-year grocery career began at an A&P in Miami as an apprentice meat cutter. Afterwards, he held various roles at Publix, Allied Supermarkets and Anderson’s in Florida, working his way up the ladder before taking the helm of Farm Fresh in 1997. The company at that time was owned by Richfood Holdings, which merged with Supervalu in 1999. Farm Fresh now operates 45 stores in Virginia and North Carolina, and employs 5,200 associates.

“I’ve enjoyed my career in this business. I really have,” Dennis, who turns 66 in July, told the Newport News, Va., Daily Press. “Contrary to many people’s perception, you can make a good living in a field that’s consumer-related. If you're interested in working with people and have a desire to help, there’s a great opportunity in this business.”
