Fairway Market Wants ‘A Turkey For Every Table’

In response to the significant poverty rates in its operating area, Fairway Market has launched the chain-wide "A Turkey for Every Table" program to ensure that the area's needy families will be able celebrate Thanksgiving with all of the trimmings.

The New York-based grocer has pledged to donate 6,000 turkeys, plus stuffing, to local food banks, social service agencies, churches, synagogues, community centers, food pantries and other organizations in the tristate area.

Customers at all 15 New York metro Fairway locations can help out by contributing either a dollar amount or the cost of a turkey-and-stuffing meal at each checkout register. The goal is to motivate customers to provide the resources for 2,000 turkey-and-stuffing donations to augment the 4,000 that Fairway has committed, resulting in a total of 6,000 donations.

'Like No Other Market' in Corporate Responsibility

The company kicked off the program last week by donating $15,000 worth of food to food rescue organization City Harvest on National Food Day (Oct. 24).

"Fairway's slogan, 'Like No Other Market,' extends far beyond the unparalleled selection of groceries, specialty foods and organics on our shelves," noted Jack Murphy, the grocer's CEO. "We are committed to making a transformative impact in the communities in which our stores are located. This commitment has been part of our DNA for more than 80 years, and it will continue for 80 more years and beyond."

"Since 1998, City Harvest has enjoyed a strong partnership with Fairway Market, and collected close to 800,000 pounds of good food, which we have delivered to our network of over 500 community food programs across the five boroughs," said Jilly Stephens, executive director of the New York-based organization, adding that Fairway's efforts "help fill our trucks with food and increase awareness about hunger in our city."
