Eleven Supervalu Banners' Delis Move to Trans Fat-Free Oil

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Eleven of Supervalu's regional retail banners have begun making the switch to trans fat-free canola cooking oil in their delis, which the company said packs an extra benefit of reducing saturated fats.

Signage informing customers of the transition, which is expected to be completed by Labor Day, will be displayed at the deli counters in participating Supervalu stores under the banners Acme, Albertsons, bigg's, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher's, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, Shaw's, Shop 'n Save, and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy.

"We're all for surprising and delighting our customers with food choices that improve and enhance their lives," said Mike Buck, v.p./service deli merchandising, Supervalu. "Not only does this move to a new, zero trans fat cooking oil for our deli prepared foods help us better meet our customers' needs, the additional reduction of saturated fat allows our customers to enjoy the same great-tasting deli selections in a more healthful way."

Supervalu banner delis prepare a variety of fried products, which vary from store to store and may include items like fried chicken.

The company said the transition to canola cooking oil complements its "Premium Fresh & Healthy" initiative, a strategy designed to emphasize great-tasting, high-value products that are easy to prepare and easy to find.

The Premium Fresh & Healthy program also focuses on visual merchandising and fresh departments that offer natural and organic products, expanded perishables, international foods, enhanced pharmacy, and health and beauty departments to support healthy lifestyles.
