Editor's Note: Socially Speaking

With alcoholic beverages a big part of social occasions, it’s no surprise to see beer, wine, and spirits following many of today’s foremost trends, particularly those that I refer to as “social-mobile” culture -- or the convergence of the digital world of social media with mobile devices.

Just visit any alcoholic brand’s Facebook page and you’ll see what I mean. Consumers are finding events hosted by beverage distributors in their local areas, and if they don’t feel like traveling, they can enjoy a virtual toast with online friends or Twitter followers.

You can even buy a friend a drink from your phone using a Facebook app.

But here’s an idea for an iPhone App that could really be a life-saver at times: a bottle opener/corkscrew embedded in the iPhone, and depending on your wrist movement (whether it’s the twisting or the corkscrew or the flipping of the bottlecap), wine or beer pairing suggestions pop up on the screen.

What do you think? Should I apply for a patent – or stick with my day job?
