Editor's Note

With almost half of consumers’ food budgets still being spent in restaurants — from full-service to quick-service venues — we are pleased to present the inaugural edition of Progressive Grocer’s Foodservice Trend Alert monthly e-newsletter, which will aim to keep grocers abreast of need-to-know news in key foodservice areas such as menu development trends, food safety, design, supplies and research. Of equal importance, PG’s new Foodservice Trend Alert will also provide the latest equipment- and design-related developments and insights that are paramount for today’s evolving and increasingly important retail foodservice programs.

Indeed, with restaurant foodservice business predicted to pick up in the second half of this year, savvy food retailers will want to take full advantage of every opportunity to retain their share of shoppers’ stomachs, and the latest addition to PG’s slate of monthly category-specific Trend Alerts reflects a renewed commitment to the dynamic foodservice segment of the business.

It is axiomatic that it is harder to regain lost customers than attract new shoppers, and over the course of the current recession, many consumers have discovered the value and convenience of their local grocer’s foodservice offerings. This newsletter aims to be the quiver from which retailers may draw many of the requisite arrows in the battle for foodservice parity.

There is a vast amount of foodservice knowledge and experience among Progressive Grocer’s collective readership, and we thus welcome all comments, suggestions, and ideas, so feel free to reach out to me via [email protected].
