Dominick's, YMCA Team for Health and Wellness Alliance

Safeway's Chicago-based Dominick's division and the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago have teamed up to encourage local consumers to lead healthier lifestyles.

Dominick's has made a $10,000 donation in the form of gift cards to the YMCA during its ongoing annual membership drive. The gift cards will be distributed through the balance of this month to each new member who joins one of Chicago's local YMCA branches. Every January, the organization has long promoted the programs and services offered across its 19 membership centers. For the first time in 2009, however, the membership push is focusing on a more holistic approach of addressing the health needs of the Chicagoland area.

Jeff Norkiewicz, VP of retail marketing execution for the 80-store Dominick's division, said both the grocery chain and the YMCA represent "two brands that have a common mission in mind: focusing on improving the health of employees and customers by maintaining a healthy lifestyle."

Stephen S. Cole, president and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago concurs: "Wellness is more than the miles you log on a treadmill. It incorporates healthy food choices as well. Now more than ever, families are having a hard time stretching their food budget, and our partnership with Dominick's helps us provide the fitness and nutrition components for families across the region."
