Dole to Use RFID-Embedded Pallets to Increase Supply Chain Visibility

Dole Fresh Fruit Co. plans to use Orlando, Fla.-based Intelligent Global Pooling Systems’ all-plastic pallets with embedded RFID tags in the shipping of some of its products within North America.

“Our decision to incorporate iGPS as part of our shipping network reflects Dole’s desire to continually provide our customers with added value,” said William Goldfield of Westlake Village, Calif.-based Dole Fresh Fruit. “We see iGPS’ all-plastic pallet as an opportunity to strengthen our supply chain, especially with respect to Dole’s firm commitment to environmental responsibility, food safety and worker protection.”

The non-porous iGPS pallet was designed to prevent the absorption of liquids, and provide an extra margin of safety for the food supply, while embedded RFID tags enable tracking of shipments throughout the supply chain. According to iGPS, the potential weight savings per pallet means less fuel is required for transport, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the pallet is 100 percent recyclable.
