Denise Austin 'Subs' As Food Pyramid Exercise Figure In New Idaho Potato Spot

EAGLE, Idaho -- The Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) launched a new television commercial featuring the MyPyramid icon wrought large. The commercial, which stars fitness icon Denise Austin, who serves as the IPC's healthy lifestyle spokesperson, is set against the backdrop of the USDA's new pyramid graphic and begins with a tight shot of Austin walking up the stairs of what is later revealed as the new pyramid.

An accompanying script talks about the importance of regular exercise and a balanced diet, including Idaho potatoes.

Austin was an invited spokesperson at the USDA's unveiling of the new food guidance system in April 2005, where she talked about how Americans can incorporate exercise into their daily lifestyles, and how much she supports the new pyramid's inclusion of physical activity as an element in the revised symbol.

Austin has long been a vocal advocate of including complex carbohydrates, such as those found in potatoes. "They are a great source of energy and provide vital fuel for the active lifestyle that we should all strive for,' she said.

The new campaign evolved from a commercial last year that also starred Austin, as well as a smaller version of the former pyramid.

The new spot will debut Oct. 17 in the following markets: Atlanta; Birmingham;
Boise; Boston; Charlotte; Chicago; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Columbus; Denver; Detroit; Grand Rapids; Houston; Idaho Falls; Indianapolis; Jacksonville; Kansas City; Miami; Milwaukee; Minneapolis; Nashville; New York; Oklahoma City; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Pittsburgh; Pocatello; Sacramento; San Antonio; Tampa; Twin Falls; and Washington D.C.
