D'Agostino to Host Bagging Contest

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- The NYC Best Bagger Championship, hosted by D'Agostino Supermarkets here, is the first New York City event in a yearlong nationwide program in pitting the top grocery baggers in the country against each other for prizes and the title of America's Best Bagger.

Contestants will be judged by such criteria as speed, bag-building technique, weight distribution between bags, style.

"Excellence in bagging represents an important element in providing outstanding customer service in an area in which independent community-focused retailers excel," said D'Agostino Supermarkets president and c.o.o. Nicholas D'Agostino III in a statement.

At each D'Agostino location, contestants will compete Sept. 27 in two rounds, the first with paper bags and the second with plastic or reusable poly bags.

Items to be packed during the competition will be bagged salads, chips, soap and soap powder, salad dressing, cookies, glass jars of spaghetti sauce, canned soup, a wrapped deli sandwich, frozen dinner, bread, oranges, light bulbs, a tissue box and several items from D'Agostino's Smart Price line, which includes products available at value prices with Green Points.

On Oct. 4 the finalists from each store will compete for the title of "NYC's Best Bagger." The winner from each store will receive $100 D'AG gift certificates and 5,000 S&H Green Points, which are redeemable at any D'Agostino store or at the Green Points Web site, respectively.

The overall NYC winner will get a $250 gift certificate, additional Green Points, and a trip to compete in the state finals.

Additionally, just for fun, D'Agostino will stage a competition for consumers, with the same rules and bagging the same items. The top three consumers who tie or beat the best D'Ag baggers will receive 250 Green Points.

A champion supermarket employee bagger from each state is eligible to enter the finals at the National Grocers Association Annual Convention, to be held in next year at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel. The 2008 competition will be the 23rd annual NGA Best Bagger Competition.

D'Agostino Supermarkets operates 15 stores in Manhattan and three in Westchester County, N.Y.
