Cub Foods Survey Reveals Twin Cities Favorite Halloween Treats
STILLWATER, Minn. -- Twin Cities residents, fill up your candy bowls. A new survey conducted by Cub Foods here found that 83 percent of kids plan to trick or treat in their neighborhoods this year.
In the survey, conducted at four Twin Cities Cub Foods stores on Sep. 30 and Oct.1, 2006, the retailer asked 442 kids between ages 5 and 12 about their favorite Halloween costumes, activities and, of course, candy.

Chocolate was found to be the big favorite with Twin Cities trick-or-treaters, 43 percent of which named some type of chocolate candy as their top choice in general, and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups in particular. Candy corn, the perennial Halloween classic, was the second place favorite.
Researchers also asked kids to rate their favorites among the Twin Cities top 10 best-selling candies. When presented with all 10 candies, kids ranked Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers as their first and second choices, respectively. The third favorite was Kit Kat, followed by Butterfinger, which ranked No. 4 with Nestle Crunch rounding out the top five. The sixth through tenth favorite items, in descending order, were: Hershey bar, candy corn, Three Musketeers, Milky Way and popcorn balls.
While the majority of kids (83 percent) are planning to go trick-or-treating this year, about 20 percent of kids said they are planning to host or attend a Halloween party.
Whatever each child's plans, every kid needs one thing: a costume. And in the race for the best costumes, the girls were ahead. Cub's survey showed that with just four weeks before Halloween, 8 percent more girls than boys had made their final costume call.
The top costume pick among girls' was a princess. The second most popular costume for girls was a witch, followed by other popular girls' costumes like: cheerleaders, fairies, cats, butterflies, vampires, Cinderella, ballerinas, angels and Snow White.
For the boys who had decided, the top costume pick was a ninja, with Spiderman, Power Rangers and Batman tying for the second most popular costume. Other popular Halloween costumes were Jason of "Friday the 13th" fame, Superman, superheroes, rock stars, hockey players, Dracula and cowboys.
Cub Foods was established in 1968 as one of the nation's first discount grocery stores. The organization was purchased in 1980 by SUPERVALU and currently operates 54 stores in the Twin Cities.
