Crisis Negotiations Render New Farmer Jack/UFCW Contract

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. -- Crisis negotiations between A&P and UFCW Local 876 have resulted in a new agreement intended to restore the Farmer Jack stores to profitability and preserve jobs, the union said yesterday.

After an anticipated sale of Farmer Jack stores under a modified agreement with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 876 had fallen through, the UFCW Local 876 Farmer Jack advisory committee authorized the union's bargaining committee to re-open talks with A&P.

The new agreement continues to protect health care and pension benefits, while improving several other features of the prior modified agreement. The union and A&P have both said this is a one shot deal to try to save the stores and the jobs.

Details of the new and improved agreement will not be disclosed until after the agreement has been presented to the advisory committee and distributed to the members. The deadline for acceptance is November 1 at midnight.
