The Commons by United Supermarkets Opens at Texas Tech
The Commons by United Supermarkets, named in recognition of a $3 million gift from United Supermarkets, LLC, officially opened its doors on the campus of Texas Tech University after an Aug. 29 ribbon-cutting. The 20,500-square-foot, two-story facility features a Mongolian-style grill, pizza store, miniature grocery shop and bagel shop.
“United Supermarkets is really happy to have our name on this building,” said United CEO Robert Taylor. “We are proud of our longstanding partnership with Texas Tech. We have been a part of the university in the past, we are a part of it now, and we plan to be a part of it in the future.
The funds from United’s gift created the United Supermarkets Graduate Fellowship Endowment and the United Supermarkets Scholarship Endowment, both providing scholarships to deserving students at the university. A portion of the donation also will be used for operational support of the new Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing in Abilene, Texas.
This is the second-largest financial gift in United’s history, behind the $10 million gift in 1996 used to fund the construction of the university’s basketball and volleyball facility, the United Spirit Arena.
Lubbock, Texas-based United Supermarkets operates 51 stores under four distinct formats: United Supermarkets, Market Street, Amigos United and United Express.
