Comedy Series Set in Grocery Store to Debut Next Month
ATLANTA - Retailers will have a chance to laugh at themselves a little starting next month, via a parody of life in the express lane known as "10 Items or Less," a TV comedy set in a family-owned grocery store staffed run by what cable network TBS said is "a host of interesting characters."
Starring John Lehr and combining scripted and improvisational elements, the show premieres Monday, Nov. 27, at 11 p.m. (ET/PT) as the first in a slate of late-night comedy series being developed by TBS, a division of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. here.

Lehr portrays Leslie Pool, who returns to his native Ohio to take over the Greens & Grains grocery store he has just inherited from his father. Leslie's "arch nemesis," Amy (Jennifer Elise Cox, best known as Jan Brady in "The Brady Bunch Movie" and its sequel), manages the competing Super Value Mart down the street.
The staff at Greens & Grains consists Carl (Robert Clendenin), a stockboy and Leslie's sidekick; Yolanda (Roberta Valderrama), the sharp-tongued produce manager; Buck (Greg Davis Jr.), a bagger who attends night school; Ingrid (Kirsten Gronfield), a shy customer service representative with a passion for Renaissance festivals; Richard (Christopher Liam Moore), a cashier who dreams of being a professional ice dancer; and Todd (Chris Payne Gilbert), a butcher who aspires to be a stock car driver.
"10 Items or Less" will also feature some unexpected cast members, as the series is shot in a real working grocery store. "The store is open for business," explains Lehr, "so actual customers are shopping around us as we shoot. We're all dressed in uniform, so people are asking us where certain products are shelved. Often this stuff gets into the show."
