Chock full o'Nuts Expands Cafes and Kiosks in Metro New York
NEW YORK -- Chock full o'Nuts cafes and kiosks are spreading throughout the New York metropolitan area, finding homes in many supermarkets.
The 135 locations serving Chock full o' Nuts coffee currently include Gristedes and ShopRite stores, as well as West Point Military Academy, Stony Brook University, Duane Reade, the Jacob Javits Center; and Greeley and Herald Square.
"Most of the new locations are kiosks -- which is much like a footprint within another store -- not a free-standing location," spokeswoman Carolyn Krehel told Progressive Grocer. "The only shops that are full cafes are in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn; Greely and Herald Square; and Hoboken, N.J."
Additionally, kiosks are scheduled to open in the lobby of the Milford Plaza in the first week of January, and in Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Times Square in March.
"Chock full o'Nuts has been one of New York's most beloved brands of coffee for generations, known for having the highest reputation for quality, consistency, and value," said Jim LaGanke, s.v.p. of the Chock full o'Nuts Cafe Division, in a statement.
The full-service cafes offer an assortment of coffee blends, including Chock full o'Nuts New York Classics and seasonal brews, along with hot and cold specialty drinks and fruit smoothies. The locations also serve Chock full o'Nuts' Date Nut Bread and Cream Cheese Sandwiches, as well as a large variety of muffins, bagels, pastries, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps, soups, and salads. By contrast, the kiosks have a limited menu and serve items such as egg sandwiches, coffee classics, muffins, and bagels.
William Black opened the first Chock full o'Nuts cafe, on the corner of 42nd and Broadway, in 1932. He quickly expanded his chain to 18 shops throughout the city, and in 1953 he started selling Chock full o'Nuts coffee in grocery stores. In 1993 there was a resurgence of Chock full o'Nuts coffee, and the brand was reintroduced to New York City after almost 20 years of dormancy.
