Central Grocers CEO Caccamo Retires; Jim Denges Assumes Helm

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. -- Joe Caccamo, president and c.e.o., has retired from member-owned grocery cooperative Central Grocers, Inc. here, while Jim Denges, former v.p./assistant general manager has been promoted to succeed him.

Caccamo, who has been with Central Grocers for more than a half century, will remain as an advisor for the remainder of 2007 to assist with the transition.

"Working with the many outstanding individuals that make up the Central Grocers cooperative has been the most rewarding part of my career," said Caccamo. "I know that I am leaving the organization in excellent hands."

Denges, a 29-year veteran of the organization, began his career in the purchasing and marketing side of the business.

Central Grocers, which provides a full line of wholesale groceries and grocery products to over 200 independent grocers throughout the Chicago and Northwest Indiana areas, distributes many items under the Centrella private label. Its retail subsidiary operates the Strack & Van Til and Ultra Foods grocery chains in these combined markets. In the past year, the cooperative purchased 14 Cub Foods stores, primarily for the value of the locations, have been turned over to several of the retail chains in the cooperative.

With an employee base that exceeds 5,000, the co-op projects $1.4 billion in 2007 consolidated sales.
