California Grocery Workers Approve New Contract
LOS ANGELES - California grocery chain workers have overwhelmingly approved a new three-year contract, averting a possible strike, their union said on Monday.
The contract covers union members working at Albertson's, Stater Brothers Supermarkets, Ralph's, Unified Western Grocers and Vons in southern California. The 4,000 covered workers hold jobs at warehouses, dairies, and as truck drivers and office staff, according to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Union and company negotiators worked throughout the night on Friday and into early Saturday, with final voting taking place over the weekend.
The union said it objected to initial wage offers, health insurance and pension plans put forward by the companies.
Members of the Teamsters had been working under a contract extension, which expired on Saturday, The Teamsters said.
The Teamsters represent 1.4 million workers in the United States and Canada.
